IN THE BEGINNING … : OPENINGS, PROMISES, AND GROUNDING YOUR NEW PROJECT
“The beginning is the most important part of the work.” ―Plato, The Republic
When discussing the beginnings of her works, Toni Morrison once said: “Endings I always know, because that’s always what the book is about. The problem is getting there. I used to have these really awful beginnings—never really beginnings, they were starts.” What, exactly, is the difference between a beginning and a start? How are the promises made by a short story’s opening different from those of a novel’s beginning? How are they different from the beginning of a piece of creative nonfiction? The matter of what defines a beginning and a start is much more than semantics: it’s a matter of knowing, as a writer, where you find yourself in your project’s journey. This generative workshop will explore the makings of a compelling beginning in order to help us start fresh, compelling new writing projects.
