Thinking prompt #11: A FEW (LIBERATING) THOUGHTS ON WRITING

Hi Everyone,

I was going though my old teaching notes and found a kind of bullet-point manifesto on writing for my students (and myself!).

Here are a few, to start:

• Think of the novel—of writing in general—as a passionate experiment.

• As writers, we are choreographers of reality. Our role is to expand the terms of reality.

• Writing may help make sense of the world but it prescribes nothing.

• Find the stillness that goes into the making of art.
