Writing prompt #43: SELF-INTERROGATION
Hi Everyone,
I recently read LOST IN TRANSLATION by Eva Hoffman, a memoir of her harrowing migration from Poland to Canada at the age of thirteen—and the ensuing years of difficulties, cultural dislocation, and adaptation.
Occasionally, Hoffman uses the clever device of engaging the voice of ‘old Eva’ in conversation with ‘new Eva.’ The two Evas discuss everything from the mundane (e.g., hairstyles) to the profound (what kind of person Eva was becoming in Vancouver versus who she might’ve become in Cracow).
Of course, this gave me an idea …
YOUR PROMPT: Choose an exact point in the past for one of your characters. Write a dialogue in which this character’s old self is in conversation with their present self. Better yet, make it an argument that neither wins—and as high stakes as possible.
Have fun!
Abrazos,
Cristina
