Writing prompt #59: FLORA & FAUNA
Hi Everyone,
Growing up in New York City, it took me a while to catch up with flora and fauna beyond squirrels, pigeons, and oak trees. Now an avid hiker and birder, I’m much more fluent with the specifics of my environments—on the page, and off. Describing the natural world in a story enriches its sense of place, and lends your narrator both more authority and sympathy.
YOUR PROMPT: Make a list of as many of the plants and animals that exist, however peripherally, in your work-in-progress. Don’t forget the insects, the fish in the nearby river, the migratory birds, the old-growth trees in the park. Now use this list—very selectively—to set a new scene.
And while you’re at it, get out and go out for a walk!
Abrazos,
Cristina
