Hi Everyone,
I’m delighted to invite everyone to Novelist Marisel Vera’s online Q & A presentation on writing historical fiction:
BONE OF MY BONE: CRAFTING YOUR HISTORICAL SKELETON
Learn how to create a narrative framework, or “skeleton,” from the real life historical archive, and how to use the “bones” of history, hard facts, and dead people to give stories momentum, structure, and intrigue.

WORKSHEET (optional):
Marisel has asked me to share this questionnaire/worksheet with you. Please feel free to fill it out ahead of time, if you wish:
Bone of My Bone: Crafting Your Historical Skeleton
Invitation: Make a “historical skeleton” outline for one of your own stories!
PART 1: Digging
In a sentence or less, write what comes to mind below or next to each prompt.
1. A Title for your story (Working title is fine!):
2. A historical event you are interested in:
3. An event leading up to this historical event:
4. An event following this historical event:
5. A character living during this time:
6. A defining trait about this character:
7. This character’s connection to the event:
8. Another character living during this time:
9. A defining trait about that character:
10. This character’s connection to the event:
11. A historical fact– related to this period- that intrigues you:
12. A question or curiosity you have about this story or event:
PART 2: Connecting the Bones
Now, pick one word from each of your replies and write it in a box next to the skeleton below. Pick the word that is most intriguing to you. The numbers for each prompt correspond to the numbers in each box. However, if you prefer, you can also just write the words where you like. Feel free to print this page and do it longhand. (Marisel will show this to you online, as it wouldn’t upload.)
ON YOUR OWN TIME
Go above and beyond- Bring your skeleton to life! - Cut out your skeleton (or the copy here) and, with clippings from magazines or your own drawings, style your skeleton after the character in your story who is most mysterious to you right now. Keep a pencil and notepad near you as you dress the skeleton, in case you begin to learn something about this character or the world they live in.
