I’m thrilled that so many of you have signed up for this experiment in writing, reading, and community building!
Every Tuesday I’ll be asking you to submit questions about craft that I’ll address in a Friday post. I’ll focus on one question a week then open it up to discussion. Eventually, I hope that tackling these thorny issues will do two things: 1) offer practical advice; 2) remind us that we’re not alone.
And by ‘craft,’ I don’t mean anything formal or established about writing—which I resist—but what we’re personally struggling with as we shape (and reshape) our writing.
Perhaps you’re finding it hard to get the voice of a character just right? Or you’re anxious about hurting relatives with your writing (I personally thought I’d have to leave the country when my first novel came out!)? Or your stories have been culturally misconstrued in other settings?
Please know that your questions—and your work— are welcome and will be respected here. I’m interested in literary experimentations and cross-pollinating hybrids of all kinds as well as more traditional forms of storytelling. If your writing hasn’t ‘fit’ elsewhere, you’ll find good company among us.
I look forward to reading your questions in this thread. Thanks!
Hi Cristina and community of writers! I'm working on developing a particular neighborhood during a partiuclar year and time as a main character/protagonist in my novel. Other than to write description and specific details, what might be done?
Hi Marisel, What a great question! I'll plan to address this with a writing prompt next Thursday. And I'm excited to hear more about your novel-in-progress, too. xox
For everyone: Please check out Marisel's gorgeous new book, A TASTE OF SUGAR.
