I’m delighted to announce our first online panel with two stellar young New York editors. They’ll be talking about the current state of publishing, issues of diversity, what they look for in manuscripts —and happily take your questions!
Please mark your calendars for Sunday, May 16 at 1 PM EDT (10 AM PDT). A reminder and zoom link will be sent to subscribers two days before the event.
Here are their bios:
PILAR GARCIA-BROWN (she/her) is an editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, concentrating on voice-driven literary and commercial fiction and narrative nonfiction, with a focus on female stories, LGBTQ stories, and diverse representation. She's interested in books that tackle urgent, contemporary social and cultural themes in an engaging, irreverent way. Recent and forthcoming titles include: Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour; Yes, Daddy by Jonathan Parks-Ramage; The Very Nice Box by Laura Blackett and Eve Gleichman; In Sensorium by Tanaïs; and NBCC award winner You Play the Girl by Carina Chocano, among others. She's from Los Angeles and now lives in Brooklyn.
JENNY XU is an editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, where she edits non-fiction and poetry. She mentors through Representation Matters Mentorship Program and PoC in Publishing, and is on the board of MassLEAP, a youth poetry nonprofit. Some of her authors include David Yi, Lorelei Lee, and Natasha Trethewey.
Please note: THIS IS A SUBSCRIBERS-ONLY EVENT. Do take a moment to upgrade your sign-up to a monthly or annual subscription for less than the price of a cup of coffee per week. Thanks!!
Future online events will include ‘talking translation’ with Achy Obejas, discussing the art of historical novels with Marisel Vera, and celebrating the launch of Carolina De Robertis’s new book, The President and the Frog (as well as discussing the ‘caudillo’ novel tradition in Latin American letters). More on these later … DON’T MISS OUT AND SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
Abrazos,
Cristina
PS: Please feel free to submit your questions for the editors on this thread to get things going!
