My inspiration goes back to my teen years: Pearl S. Buck, I know she problematic now, but then, it was the first book I read that wasn’t about white people. Anne Frank because I was the same age when I read her diary as she was when she wrote it. Piri Thomas because Down These Mean Streets was so vivid in his racial depictions among PRs.
