I want to throw myself to the lions. I plan to submit a short story to a crime theme salsa anthology. ( I can send you the link to share. ) The only thing I know about Salsa is how to dance it. The criteria requires the story to be written to a specific song and lyrics can’t be used but somehow must be referenced as well as the title, composer, and musicians. I have a thing for Héctor Lavoe so he was my first choice, but Willie Colón’s Junio 73 changed my mind. I am gonna try to hang the crime of arsons for profit in Chicago 1973 to the song. Cause you know PR history is my jam.

Cristina, can you suggest fabulous writing about music? I am interested in writing a story where the actual music of a particular song serves as the structure for the story. (There are no lyrics.) I have no musical training whatsoever, only a love for music.

Hi Marisel, My all-time favorite piece to listen to when I'm thinking about novel structure is Bruckner's Symphony No. 7. It's got it all! For shorter pieces or scenes, I love any instrumental by Cachao, the Cuban bassist and composer. His Master Sessions Vols. 1-2 are amazing. And if they don't work for writing, they certainly will for dancing! xox, Cristina

What I want to do is set a story to a particular song, using that music for the structure of the story. It must be this song. There are no lyrics yet I know the story’s theme. How to do this is my delicious challenge.I am wondering how other writers have done this so I can learn from them.

Do you have that particular song yet? I don't know if/how others do this but I immerse myself in the music/song until I feel that it's a part of me, that I could hum it as easily as I breathe. That's when the ideas start coming . . . Let me know how it goes! xox
